This is an intermediate/advanced level child custody course designed to provide evaluators with up to date information regarding relevant scientific knowledge which evaluators should possess. When conducting child custody evaluators, it is critical to understand how biases and heuristics can impact evaluators impressions and decision-making. Understanding these cognitive processes and how to manage them is critical to developing a scientifically crafted child custody evaluation.
Child custody evaluations often require evaluators to recommend parenting plans for children. Understanding the unique needs of children with special needs requires different considerations when developing parenting plans than with children without special needs. A risk analysis will be presented which will assist evaluators in creating developmentally appropriate parenting plans for children with special needs. Assessing for sexual abuse is also at times a part of a child custody evaluation. This seminar will review some of the Psychological testing is often conducted as a part of a comprehensive child custody evaluation. This seminar will review commonly used psychological tests, including the upcoming MMPI-3, R-PAS, PAI, 16PF, as well as various parenting and other measures. The seminar will also focus on understanding how the tests were developed so they can be better explained in court.
