Program Description:

Participants will gain insight into how local court rules can differ and the impact that can have on their work. Participants will be provided with Family Code 6320 and information on how the code impacts the definition of domestic violence. They will understand the dynamic of coercive control and the importance of its inclusion in the concept of domestic violence Participants will earn about the impact of the Covid pandemic on IPV. The effect of IPV on children will be shared along with recent research. Participants will learn from Retired Superior Court Judge Margo Lewis Hoy will address how mental health professionals can assist the court in protecting children. The Family System’s Model of reunification/conjoint therapy will be shared and applied to cases in which domestic violence has occurred.

Goals and Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of knowing the local rules in the venue in which you are working
  2. Interpret Family Code 6320 and its emphasis on coercive control
  3. Discuss the impact of the Covid pandemic on domestic violence
  4. Apply the impact of exposure to domestic violence on children to their work
  5. Summarize how, as a mental health professional, one can assist the court in protecting children
  6. Explain the importance of utilizing the Family System’s Model in reunification/conjoint therapy in cases where domestic violence has occurred

CE Approval Information
