This course is number seven of eight total 5-hour courses totaling 40-hours of comprehensive custody training. The full catalog of courses is designed to provide participants with the knowledge to express legally compliant, ethical and comprehensive custody evaluations. All eight courses highlight controlling American Psychological standards of practice, AFCC guidelines, and California Rules of Court.

Course Seven – Custody Evaluations 101: Managing Value Disputes; Never Married Parents; & the Holiday/Vacation Schedule; Self-care, Safety & & Social Media; 5.0 CE Hours
Participants will be introduced to how to manage disputes in opposing values including international travel, private education, religious education, tattoos and piercings. The presenter will demonstrate how these disputes impact the ultimate recommendations in the evaluator’s report.
The unique aspects of non-traditional families such as never married parents, and biological nonlegal parents will be addressed. Information regarding how to provide a Holiday/Vacation schedule will be provided. The critical components of clinicians’ self-care and professional ethics will be explained. Information regarding how social media impacts the evaluator’s role will be provided with regard to boundary violations, information that could create bias, political differences, and informed consent.
Course Goal and Objectives
- Analyze differences in values between the parents and be able to apply this information to their reports.
- Describe the unique qualities that exist when evaluating parents that have never been married.
- Develop a Holiday/Vacation plan that is most appropriate for the family being evaluated.
- Apply concepts of self-care and safety while conducting custody evaluations. 5. Describe how social media is integrated into the process and can impact the custody evaluation.
