Program Description:
In this 6.0-hour course, participants will gain skills in evaluating, mediating, and counseling difficult families going through divorce and custody battles. The topics on point will focus on how mental health personnel can evaluate families and create parenting plans in cases where there is an allegation of mental illness in one of the parents. The afternoon will focus on how mediators and evaluators can adequately assess and intervene in cases where the children refuse or resist contact with one of the parents. This 6.0-hour workshop meets the criteria for the initial and annual required training for custody evaluators and mediators in California pursuant to California Evidence Code Section 730.

- Describe characteristics of parents with challenging personalities and identify strategies to manage these clients.

- Consider a Decision-making process for examining mental health allegations.
- Apply a decision-making model for parenting to a case of mental illness.
- Discuss a process to Step up and modify parenting plans.
- Describe components of high conflict parent intervention.
- Differentiate parent-child contact problems.
- Describe trauma-informed model to assess resist-refuse dynamics.
- Identify interventions with families when a child is resisting contact with a parent.
- Identify strategies to manage cases of resist/refuse dynamics.
