This interdisciplinary training led by Dr. Matthew Sullivan, Hon. Marjorie Slabach, and Dr. Rebecca Bailey will explore the characteristics of high conflict families and legal and mental health interventions where children are resisting contact with a parent.  The program will also explore the spectrum of interventions for these families and best practices for legal and mental health professionals who work on these cases.

Special attention will be given to intensive psycho-educational programs such as Overcoming Barriers and Transitioning Families.

Course Objectives

Objectives: Completion of the 6-hour course will enhance your ability to:

  • To present a detailed description of the factors that contribute to a child resisting contact with a parent
  • To understand the legal and mental health aspects of children’s resistance
  • To explore common characteristics of families in high conflict situations
  • To review the research, history and current trends for working with these families
  • To discuss lessons learned from presenters’ experiences working with these families
  • To present best practices for working with high conflict families within the family court system
  • To provide a judicial officer’s perspective on how the Court can support mental health interventions with high conflict families
  • To describe the residential intensive interventions available, particularly Overcoming Barriers and Transitioning Families
