Program Description:

Stabilization in the Face of Complex Trauma: A Perspective from Ancient Tradition.  One of the enduring challenges for any clinician is how to work with clients whose trauma history is so profound or disorganizing that they begin treatment destabilized. They may arrive in the therapist’s office hyperaroused, with an urgent need to offload their burden rapid-fire, or conversely, may be shut down, frozen and almost silent. In this workshop, Sandra Paulsen, Ph.D. explores the wisdom of Shelley Pompana Spear Chief, MSW, who serves a highly symptomatic clientele with complex histories of intergenerational and more recent trauma. As Sandra explains, “I don’t know anyone with more experience working with complex multiply traumatized individuals, and she does it with calmness and grace. We can all benefit from Shelley’s wisdom.” The workshop offers tactics and strategies that apply to anyone, punctuated with occasional concepts drawn from Native American/First Nations understandings and healing.

Goals and Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe three initial conditions for increasing trust and safety in first sessions.
  2. Describe two means of conducting initial interviews and treatment contracts, and the benefits of one over the other for hyperaroused or mistrustful clients.
  3. Demonstrate Eagle Wings Flapping™.
  4. Apply three specific tactics for increasing calm.
