Program Description:
In recent years, the trauma field has identified moral injury as a distinct type of trauma that arises when individuals experience or witness events that violate their deeply held moral or ethical beliefs. Unlike PTSD, which is primarily fear-based and triggered by life-threatening events, moral injury is rooted in guilt, shame, and moral conflict. This workshop will explore the definition, types, and everyday contexts of moral injury domains, including military and combat settings, healthcare, first responder roles, disaster work, and personal relationships. Dr. Paulsen will also highlight how moral injury often underlies many of the cases practitioners encounter daily, including those traumatized as children before reaching moral maturity.
This workshop is suitable for beginning, intermediate, and advanced practitioners, offering valuable insights for working with diverse populations affected by moral injury across occupational, relational, and societal contexts.
Goals & Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
- List six domains in which moral injury may occur.
- Identify four strategies for the psychotherapy of moral injury.
- Identify three cautions regarding common errors in the treatment of moral injury.
